San Cayetano

Every year many students at San Cayetano are encouraged to join an after school program. There are many different programs that San Cayetano offers which includes fitness club, robotics club, or art club. These after school programs can be very beneficial for a student as it can support social, emotional, and academic development.

It can also keep a student confident and help boost their self esteem. Here at San Cayetano we wanted to keep those important supports in place for our students as we navigate this global pandemic. Many of the students at San Cayetano are a part of the art club run by our art teacher Ms. Raeber. Inside the classroom students love to spend any extra time they may have drawing and creating art. I had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Raeber about all the wonderful opportunities the art club has to offer and the fun things the students are creating during their time at home.

When I spoke to Ms. Raeber I asked her, what is art club all about? She said “Art Club is a way for students to express their creativity, explore art skills, and participate in high - interest projects’’. She has both hybrid and distance learning students in the art club from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Ms. Raeber shared the challenges and benefits of the virtual club. Some days there are technology challenges because sometimes students struggle with their microphone and camera. However, one of her favorite parts is seeing parents involved in supporting their child especially in K-2 Art Club. Many times the parent will sit with their child providing them one-on-one support with the activity. She was so impressed with how supportive parents were, she created an award for the art club parents.

All students are welcome to join the club and all club members are provided all of the necessary supplies needed to participate. Students receive a bag of supplies to use which Ms. Raeber replenishes every few weeks throughout the school year. She has provided students with beads, yarn, paint, sharpies, foil, cardboard, and other materials to give them more options when creating art.

Students have completed dozens of projects in K-2nd. They have created bracelets, scratch art canvases, calendars, foam prints, and made items with modeling clay that they painted with watercolors. 3rd-5th grade students have created bead weavings, made prints, embossed foil, and made comic books. Currently students are learning different drawing techniques to create their own character for their comic book.

Ms. Raeber asked students to complete a survey to share their thoughts about art club. She asked if they liked having the club online. Students responded they enjoyed it, but would much rather have it in person. When asked what their favorite art project was, the most popular answer was embossing foil.

Students enjoy extra curricular activities and they are beneficial to help social, emotional, and academic support. At San Cayetano we strive to continue to create an environment where students can express themselves utilizing after school programs. If your child is interested in an art club or any of our after school activities, please do not hesitate to reach out to our front office for more information.
