Rio Rico High School Grads are the Next Generation of Teachers

With the hiring of Alex Hix to teach sports medicine at Rio Rico High School (RRHS), evidence accumulates that the demographic wheel has begun to turn in Santa Cruz Valley education.

Twenty years after Principal Lenny Allsbrooks presided over the first RRHS graduation, a growing number of graduates have returned to the valley - to teach.

“Weird does not begin to describe how surreal this experience has been,” said Hix, formerly RRHS student Alex Brasher (class of 2003). Stepping back onto campus after having been a student here, married and with children, was, for Hix, strange. “Wonderfully bizarre experiences” came flooding back to her, she recalled in a recent interview. She mentioned the imprint of being on Coach Stephen Schadler’s famed cross country team and of watching the horror of 9/11 unfold in her English teacher’s class.
